Music 190 Course schedule

There are assignments and review exercises for each week. This table provides an overview of the semester. For detailed information about each week's work, see the separate page for that week.

Remember that a given week's written assignment is due on the day of your class meeting for the following week. In order to receive the writing prompts, you must complete the review exercises on the web pages. This means that you will have to work enough in advance to be able to complete the review exercises, get the prompt, and write a draft of your essay before we meet to discuss that topic. The "Hacker topics" listed on the writing prompt page will ask you to write two sentences, one on each topic, that show that you've understood that week's writing topics from the Hacker book.

For example, at your class meeting in week 3, you will turn in your week 2 essay. You'll have with you a draft of your week 3 essay, because that's the topic we'll be discussing. You'll turn in the week 3 essay at our week 4 meeting.

Readings designated as "Chapter x" refer to Willoughby's The World of Music. "Hacker x" refers to the numbered topics in A Pocket Style Manual (we'll cover topics 1-28). "CDx/trx" refers to the CD and track on the two-CD set that comes with the textbook. Some listening selections are found only on the 5-CD set, which is on reserve in the Music Library; this is shown as "5CDset: CDx/trx."
