Gene Anderson, born in North Dakota and raised in Iowa, received a B.A. from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa, in 1963 and an M.A. and a Ph. D. in music theory from the University of Iowa in 1969 and 1981 respectively. He taught woodwinds and directed the jazz ensemble at Winona State University, Winona, Minnesota from 1972-1975 and directed the band, taught music theory and chaired the department at Monmouth College, Monmouth, Illinois, from 1978-1982.  Since 1982 he has been at the University of Richmond in Richmond, Virginia, where he teaches music theory and chairs the department.  Anderson’s articles on music theory have been published in the College Music Symposium, Indiana Theory Review and the Journal of Band Research.  His articles on early jazz have appeared in American Music and the Annual Review of Jazz Studies.  In 2007, the Association or Recorded Sound Collections (ARSC) recognized his book, The Hot Five Recordings of Louis Armstrong, with a certificate of merit, and in 2012 his article on Louis Armstrong appeared in the new edition of the Grove Dictionary of American Music (ArmeriGrove II).
