Karen Fournier is on the faculty of the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she teaches courses in music theory, analysis, and popular music. With an interest in gender and popular culture, she is working on a book entitled The Words and Music of Alanis Morissette, which will be published by Praeger in 2014. She has also finished a book-length study entitled Punk and Disorderly: Acting out Gender and Class in Early British Punk. The article that appears here reflects her other area of interest, epistemology in musical scholarship.
