Melissa E. Hoag

Melissa Hoag is Associate Professor of Music Theory at Oakland University, where she has been coordinator of the music theory area since Fall 2007. Dr. Hoag holds a Ph.D. in music theory with doctoral minors in piano performance and music history.

Professor Hoag's research interests include voice leading and rhythm and meter in Brahms as well as music theory pedagogy. Professor Hoag's articles and reviews appear in a variety of publications, including Music Theory Online, the Dutch Journal of Music Theory, Gamut, Music Theory Pedagogy Online, the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, Notes, and Semiotica.

Professor Hoag is a founding member of the editorial board for Music Theory Pedagogy Online, and has served the discipline as reader and table leader for the College Board's Advanced Placement exam in music theory since 2007. With regard to the College Music Society, Professor Hoag has served on the Music Theory Advisory Board as well as the National Student Advisory Council. Professor Hoag has also served on the Professional Development Committee of the Society for Music Theory, and is currently serving her second term as secretary for Music Theory Midwest. In 2015, Professor Hoag served as local arrangements chair for Music Theory Midwest when the conference held its twenty-sixth annual conference on Oakland's campus. Professor Hoag serves on the editorial board of Music Theory Online, a journal published by the Society for Music Theory.
