The College Music Symposium, the foremost publication of The College Music Society, was first issued in 1961 with a unique purpose that was not duplicated elsewhere. As the first editor Donald M. McCorkle noted, the Symposium was established as a “different sort of scholarly journal,” a provocative publication that “cut across lines of specialization...for discussing ideas and problems in the liberal arts college or the professional music school...for the musicologist or composer, theorist or conductor, pianist or singer, music educator or administrator.”¹ Through fifty years in print form, from 1961-2010, the Symposium served its purpose well, enlightening generations of readers from a wide variety of specialties along with the general public.

With a vision to honor the achievements of the past while using technology to meet the needs of the future, the peer-reviewed/refereed Symposium is now issued as an online publication, but expanded to include several enriching components, each with its own Editor. As such, the Symposium maintains its tradition of being a “different sort of scholarly journal,” ready for the dynamic changes of the future ahead.

We welcome submissions for consideration in any of the Symposium’s ten components:

• Scholarship and Research – peer-reviewed scholarly articles
• CMS Forums – opinions, editorials, commentary, and essays
• Reviews – reviews of books, textbooks, periodicals, and instructional materials
• Instructional Technologies and Methodologies – review and discussion of technologies and methods useful for teaching in the classroom and studio
• Music Business-Industry – presentation of reports and discussion of topics relevant to music business-industry as it relates to higher academe
• CMS Reports – in-depth reports concerning important topics, events, or issues
• Video Lectures, Performances, and Lecture-Recitals – a video archive of refereed music lectures, performances, and lecture-recitals
• Audio Performance Archive – work of the finest composers and performers in the field of music
• CMS Conference Archive – abstracts of international, national, and regional conferences
• Events in Music – information concerning events in and outside academe, including international music conferences
