James Vincent Maiello is Assistant Professor of Musicology at Vanderbilt University’s Blair School of Music, where he teaches a full range of collegiate and pre-college music history courses.  He holds a Ph.D. in Musicology and European Medieval Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara, as well as a master’s degree in Music History from Bowling Green State University and an undergraduate degree in Music Education from S.U.N.Y. Fredonia.  Maiello’s research interests include plainchant and liturgy, music and semiotics, and the philosophy of music education. His work has appeared or is forthcoming in Plainsong & Medieval Music, Notes, the Journal of Music History Pedagogy, and Fontes Artis Musicae. An article, “Updating the Alleluia at Pistoia” is also forthcoming in “Qui musicam in se habet:” Studies in Honor of Alejandro Planchart, to be published by the American Institute of Musicology. Professor Maiello is currently working on a monograph, Plainchant, Liturgy, and Identity in Medieval Pistoia.  He is also writing a brief history of the College Band Directors National Association.
