Andrea Emberly

Andrea Emberly is an ethnomusicologist who has been conducting research on Vhavenda music with children and young people in Limpopo, South Africa since 2004. Her dissertation on children’s music in Limpopo was submitted to the University of Washington in 2009. From 2009-2012 she was a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the University of Western Australia where she worked with the John Blacking Collection held at the Callaway Centre Archive. She recently curated an exhibition of Vhavenda cultural materials from the John Blacking collection that opened at the University of Venda on July 15, 2014. She was awarded a Social Science and Humanities Research Council of Canada grant for 2014-2016 to continue work on girls’ initiation ceremonies in Vhavenda communities. In addition to her work in South Africa, she has also been conducting research with new and emerging youth communities in Perth, and is collaborating on an Australian Research Council Linkage project with children and young people in the Kimberley in Western Australia. She is currently Assistant Professor of Children’s Studies at York University, Toronto, Canada.
