Jeffrey Swinkin

Jeffrey researches the areas of variation form, performance and analysis, and philosophy of music.  His articles on these topics have appeared in Music Analysis, Indiana Theory Review, and Performance Practice Review, with two forthcoming in Current Musicology and The Journal of Musicology.  Jeffrey holds degrees in piano performance from the Eastman School of Music and University of Michigan and recently received his doctorate in music theory from Michigan with a dissertation entitled, “Performative Analysis: Theorizing the Interpretation of Tonal Music.”  He previously taught music theory and piano at the University of San Francisco, and has lectured at the Universities of Stanford, Kansas, Massachusetts, and Rice, among many others.
