Stephen Siek

Stephen Siek is Professor Emeritus of Music at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio. Active as a pianist and researcher, he has recently published England's Piano Sage: The Life and Teachings of Tobias Matthay (Scarecrow, 2012), and has also annotated numerous collections for APR's series "The Matthay Pupils," including recent sets devoted to Harriet Cohen, Irene Scharrer, and Myra Hess. He has given lecture-performances throughout North America at such institutions as the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Indiana University, San Jose State University, Penn State, and the University of Kansas. He has lectured at Yale and the University of Nottingham, and his numerous articles have appeared in such journals as the American Music Teacher and Piano Quarterly. He has written extensively on American music, contributing articles to American Music and the forthcoming Amerigrove, as well as notes for Garrick Ohlsson's recent Hyperion recording of the piano works of Charles Griffes. He has also recorded The Philadelphia Sonatas of Alexander Reinagle for the Titanic label. He holds two degrees in piano performance from the University of Maryland, where he studied with Stewart Gordon, and a Ph.D. in musicology from the College-Conservatory of Music at the University of Cincinnati. He now lives in Tempe, Arizona.
