Bennett Reimer

Bennett Reimer is the John W. Beattie Professor of Music Education Emeritus at Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, where he was Chair of the Department of Music Education and founder and director of the ongoing Center for the Study of Education and the Musical Experience, a research group of doctoral students and faculty members. He is the author and editor of some two dozen books and over 150 articles and chapters. His A Philosophy of Music Education: Advancing the Vision, 3rd edition (Prentice Hall, 2003), is a 90% reconceptualization as compared to the previous two editions. His fields of specialization include philosophy of music education, curriculum theory, research theory, comprehensive arts curriculum, and intelligence theory. He has lectured and presented workshops and keynote addresses all over the United States and the world. A special double issue of The Journal of Aesthetic Education, "Musings: Essays in Honor of  Bennett Reimer," was published in Winter, 1999. Reimer is the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award, State University of New York College at Fredonia; the Presidential Award, Illinois Music Educators Association; an honorary doctorate from DePaul University, Chicago; the Legends of Teaching Award from the Northwestern University School of Music; the MENC Senior Researcher Award, and is an inductee into the Music Educators Hall of Fame.
